Los Angeles International Airport – Bradley West Gates Core Improvements Project

(NBA worked with Walsh-Austin JV team) - Los Angeles, CA

The $1 billion Construction Manager at Risk - Bradley West Core Improvements Project consists of the expansion and renovation of the existing Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) central core and associated improvement projects. The Bradley West Core Improvement will expand the core building to the west and connect to the new Bradley West concourses on the north and south constructed under the separate Bradley West Gates project.  The expansion of the TBIT central core includes approximately 500,000 square feet of new construction on six levels.  NBA provided LEED coordination and LEED Administration for this project as well as Document Control and Resident Engineering as part of the Walsh/Austin JV design/build contractor.  This project achieved a LEED Silver certification and was the first LAX project to incorporate LEED standards.  The project maximized operational efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.  This renovation achieved 20% energy savings and 24% water conservation.  The savings in electricity alone translated to $570,000/year.  In addition, 75% of construction and demolition waste was recycled or salvaged.  Other green features include:

  • Low emitting paints, adhesive carpet and sealant for building interior

  • Low flow plumbing fixture in bathrooms

  • Efficient lighting fixtures and controls with occupancy sensor to reduce energy during off peak hours

  • Upgrading HVAC control that reset temperatures to maximize efficiency without sacrificing occupant comfort

  • Placing concrete mixers and other equipment on site to reduce the number of trips construction vehicles must make to and from the site.

  • Designating specific routes that construction vehicles must use when traveling to and from the site

  • Retrofitting construction equipment with emission and noise reduction devices

  • Controlling dust
